The Detectorist: Friday, June 30 — investigating new music (as recovery continues)

Yes, I’m investing still investing in physical copies of movies and music as the streaming world makes clearer and clearer that things can just disappear or be altered without us having much control. Someday you’ll find me on my desert island with my new DVD set from Acorn of the complete television series Detectorists, my favorite TV series of the last decade. I’ll have a lot of treasures there that you won’t be able to stream online.

In that series, the two main characters played by Mackenzie Crook and Toby Jones meditate on the meaning of life while wandering around open fields and swinging their fancy metal detectors around in search of unlikely treasure. And they find all kinds of treasure, even as they expand and refine their definition (and ours) of treasure.

And so I may start calling posts like these “The Detectorist”: quick scans of signals I’m receiving that suggest I’m on the verge of meaningful discoveries.
