Time to catch up! Here are some overdue notes on Superman.

I'm late to the party. But then, the party would not have enjoyed my take on James Gunn's Superman. Here's the first of several catch-up reviews I plan to post this week.

Time to catch up! Here are some overdue notes on Superman.

It’s the end of July. I’m in a good mood — I’ve finished writing my new book.

But as a moviegoer, I’m feeling deeply disappointed in the summer of 2025. Most of the movies that looked like big summer movies have let me down. I’ve seen a few great films, but only a couple of those were on the big screen. And I want to make sure you have a chance to catch them if you get the chance. So, don’t be surprised if you see a bunch of posts in the coming week. I’m playing catch-up.

I haven’t been able to share my thoughts on many movies this summer so far. June and July were what I call the “crucible” weeks for my new book. I’ve been testing every line of the manuscript, trying to improve each paragraph and catch every error before the timer runs out. And that has led to major revisions, revisions that have made things challenging for my editors. (If you’re reading this, I apologize!) This book is more deeply personal to me than any I’ve written before. It includes stories about my childhood, my family, my schools, and my churches, and how movies set me free from fear-driven religion while deepening my faith. I want to get it right. As right as possible. I don’t know if I’ll get this chance again, the way things are going in the world.

Anyway — let’s get to the movies. First up, the most talked-about, highly anticipated movie of the summer.

This, except it’s me with my cat Mosely, and I’m tired from having seen far too many superhero movies in my life. [Image from the DC trailer.]
