“Is this a weird hug?”

One of the three leads in Chad Hartigan’s The Threesome asks that question during an embrace that makes obvious just how messy their relationship has become. And it stuck with me for the rest of the film. Something as seemingly simple as a hug becomes a lot more complicated if one or both participants are attracted to the other, if the boundaries of that relationship are not clear to both, and if they have a history of hurting each other.

In this film, hugs may be the least complicated of the encounters between characters.
