Reconstruction of The Fabelmans
Eli Price interviews me about Steven Spielberg's The Fabelmans, and its place in the legendary director's filmography.

My thanks to Eli Price, host of the podcast The Establishing Shot, who gave me the honor of a guest appearance. Price has been guiding his listeners, one epic conversation after another, through Steven Spielberg's filmography. For the grand finale — until Spielberg makes another movie, of course — we discussed The Fabelmans, a film that I’ve been thinking about a lot lately.
Why? Well, Spielberg and screenwriter Tony Kushner got to work soon after the legendary director's father passed, and my own father passed recently. The film retraces formative experiences in art, vocation, and faith for Spielberg, and I've just completed a memoir of my own about the movies that have shaped my life. So we had a lot to talk about!
I’m thrilled that this happened, as I never got around to writing the detailed review of this film that I’d hoped to. The best I could do was a short video commentary in my countdown of my favorite films of 2022, which you can find here.
Listen here.

Or, if you prefer, you can watch the YouTube video. Just note that I missed the memo that the video was going out to audiences too! So, as the conversation unfolded, I wasn't always speaking to the camera as much as I would have otherwise. And when I'm looking off to the side, I'm either watching a monitor where I can see Eli speaking, or I'm looking at notes that are spread all around me. The audio option might be the better choice.
I was impressed with Price as a show host who does a lot of work to prepare for an episode before he presses RECORD. He is organized, knowledgeable, and far more willing than most to take the time necessary for a deep dive into a subject. I encourage you to subscribe to his podcast!
