Beauty, grief, and mystery haunt Clint Bentley’s adaptation of Denis Johnson’s evergreen odyssey.

As moviegoers, we are accustomed to seeing historical epics about extraordinary men who respond to dramatic events with courage and intelligence. We’re ready to be inspired by heroics that change history.

We are not accustomed to seeing ordinary men caught up and carried by waves of change too vast and incomprehensible for them to fight or change. But real-world hero stories are rare and often suspect. Most of us struggle to achieve even modest goals in the unpredictable turbulence of the world around us. So much depends on privilege, on cultural stability, on economic status, on chance. And for some of us, it is all we can do to keep our heads above water in the stormy seas of change.

Train Dreams is a movie about a man like that.
