Don’t miss this limited edition of my new book — signed by more than just the author!
Don't miss your chance to pick up special-edition copies of my latest book. Signed copies, yes — but signed by one of my favorite critics.
Once in a while, an unexpected event makes me step back and marvel at my life, and how many times I have been surprised by kindness. Many of those occasions fall under a special category: Meeting and Befriending My Heroes. I won’t provide a detailed list here; this isn’t about name dropping. This is about praising one writer for his work and his generosity. “Don’t meet your heroes,” some say, implying that disappointment can only follow. Not this time.
The film critic Matt Zoller Seitz is one of my heroes in the world of the arts. He was singled out — due to his artful prose, his expertise on the art of film and on cinema history, and his prolific publication record — to step into the massive shoes of Roger Ebert at Ebert’s website when the master passed away. And he has honored Ebert’s legacy by transforming that site into treasure trove of writing by a host of excellent film critics,
I was already a big fan, and had already corresponded with him a bit. In fact, I had answered an invitation from him to engage in a conversation that he would then publish, focusing on the theological implications of the Coen brothers’ movies.
So when he came to Seattle to promote his extraordinary coffee table book on the films of West Anderson, The Wes Anderson Collection — and when I say, coffee table book, I mean that the book is the size of a coffee table! — I made it a priority to attend his book release event at Third Place Books in Seattle. Talking with him there, I found him to be humble, generous, and approachable. No surprise.
But I was surprised — no, astonished — when, after he discovered that I had a new book about film coming as a follow-up to Through a Screen Darkly 20 years after that volume’s publication, he reached out and volunteered to write the book’s foreword. I hadn’t even mustered the courage yet to approach him to ask for an endorsement, and here he was, giving more than I would have imagined.
What he wrote for this book is, yes, generous, artful, and inspiring. When I read his contribution, I couldn’t help but think, I hope that the rest of the book is not a letdown after these introductory pages!
Now, as long as this limited quantity lasts, you can purchase copies of Lost and Found in the Cathedral of Cinema from Matt’s own online bookstore.

What’s more – these copies are special: They come signed by me and by Matt!
The MZS Press site is the only place you can get these special copies.
But I have also included, in this limited edition, an email address that you can use to ask me questions or make comments about the book as you read. It was my hope, as I wrote this book, that it would spark conversations not just between readers, but between the readers and the author.
So, get yourself and your film-loving friends and family some of these copies, which have been picked up and signed by me and by Matt Zoller Seitz, while they last. Find the email address I have scribbled inside. And let's start a conversation.
(Come to think of it — even I don’t have one of these special copies! Maybe I need to buy one for myself!)
